Information about place |
The cave is situated on the right side of the Demänovská Valley, to the north off the Demänovská Cave of Freedom, with the entrance opening in the rock Bašta, 840 m above the sea level. The most admirable ice creations are formed in spring, when the substantial amount of water from melted snow leaks into the cave and that freezes and thus brings into existence massive ice ceiling and floor. The length of the cave is 1750 m from which 650m long passage is open to the public.
History
The cave was created by underground flow of Demänovka. It was explored by Juraj Bucholz j.r. Numerous inscriptions on the walls of the cave and rich literary evidence give proof of the great interest of then society of scholars as well as public. Because of the discovery of bones of a cave bear, then believed to be dragon`s, it was called Dragon`s Cave. At the lower levels of the cave wonderful ice formations can be admired. The cave was made accessible to tourists in the 80s of the last century and re-opened in 1950-1952. It is also a part of National Nature Monument of Demänovské Caves.Contact
