Protected Fauna: protected and endangered animal species like Brown Bear, Golden Eagle, Grouse (Lyrurus tetrix), Tetrao urogallus, Grass Snake (Elaphe longissima) and more

Protected Flora: relict, endemic, precious species, tied to particular biotopes with their life conditions like Gentian (Gentiana clusii), Edelweiss (Leontopodium alpinum), Soldanella carpatica, Leucojum vernum, Nuphar lutea and more

Karst and Caves in Slovakia

Karst of Slovakia covers the area exceeding 2 700 sq km and more than 4000 caves. It presents karst and man`s interest in caves. It consists of:

The karst land, the karst extension in Slovakia, the conditions for its formation and evolution, surface and underground karst phenomenon, development and morphology of caves.

Cave and Human, cave settlement in Paleolithic Age, Bronze Age, Hallstatt, Iron Age, Roman Period, Migration of Peoples, and Slavonic times.
Minerals – occurence, utilisation, protection


The Slovak Museum of Nature Protection and Speleology (SMOPaJ) was founded as an associational museum called The Museum of Slovak Karst in 1930. Since the very beginning the museum has been gathering not only natural history objects, but also and mainly collections from speleology, ethnography, history and archaeology. In its first years of existence it focused on the Slovak Karst and the Upper Liptov Region. Since 1949 it focuses exclusively on the karst formations and speleology in Slovakia. From 1970-1981 the museum was a constituent of Slovak Speleology Organisation and since 1981 its activities have spread and covered the issue of nature protection in Slovakia. The museum branch in Košice focuses on the issue of Slovak Karst documentation.
